Dive into the golden era of the Savoy Ballroom — Harlem’s swing dance mecca where Lindy Hop was born and music history was made — from Bangkok’s own swing hub, The Hop
It was called “The Home of Happy Feet,” and if you walked past 596 Lenox Avenue on a Friday night in 1937, you’d know why. The line wrapped around the block. Men in tailored suits. Women in silk and sequins. Inside, under a sea of soft lights and the pulse of a 17-piece band, the floor was alive. Welcome to The Savoy Ballroom, Harlem’s beating heart of swing.
This wasn’t just a club. It was an arena. With two grand bandstands, the Savoy wasn’t just playing music — it was launching battles. Real ones. Chick Webb vs. Count Basie. Jimmie Lunceford vs. Benny Goodman. While brass screamed and snares snapped, dancers hit the floor like prizefighters — spinning, sliding, flipping, and flying. This was the birthplace of Lindy Hop, the original street dance of swing, made up on that floor by innovators like Frankie Manning and Norma Miller, and refined night after night by dancers with rhythm in their bones and fire in their feet.
Unlike some uptown clubs of the time, the Savoy didn’t care who you were as long as you brought your A-game to the floor. It was a rare slice of democracy in a segregated city: if you could dance, you belonged. That mattered — then and now.

Why it matters for us at The Hop
At The Hop in Bangkok, we’re standing on the shoulders of those Savoy legends. Every step we teach, every jam circle we spark, is a nod to the place where it all began. The Savoy wasn’t about showing off — it was about showing up: for the music, for the joy, and for each other. That’s exactly the spirit we bring to our classes, socials, and shows.
Did You Know?
The Savoy’s legendary dance floor was made of spring-loaded maple wood. That bounce you see in old footage? It wasn’t just the dancers — the floor itself gave back. That’s the kind of magic you can’t fake.
